Nannies can be either be full-time live-in nannies, or they can arrive in the morning and leave in the evening each day. They can even come and do the ‘night shift’ for tired working parents. There are many ways in which a nanny can help you and your family.

One is to allow you to have quality time with your child. This may sound strange at first; after all, how can a nanny give you more quality time with your children when their main purpose is to care for your children while you are away from home? However, it is actually true. Hiring a nanny from a nanny agency means that you can go to work and not worry about the welfare and wellbeing of your children. In turn, this means that you can be much more productive at work, as you can concentrate on the job at hand. Therefore, when you get home after work, your mind can focus completely on your children, giving them your full attention.

You won’t be thinking of all the things left undone at work, and you will be able to play with them or take them out. You can spend important quality time with them. Equally, hiring a nanny to care for your children while you go to a class, the gym, or some other hobby or activity, is also good for the family. It means that you can enjoy some time to yourself, and you will be more relaxed with your children.

What Is A DBS Check?

A nanny isn’t a job that just anyone can do. There is a lot of training that needs to come first, and professional checks that need to be carried out. It is important that the parents look at the results of these checks before letting anyone care for their children. You may also want to think about having random drug testing in the future too, and various locations provide this.

One of these checks for a nanny – and possibly the most important of all – is the DBS. DBS stands for the Disclosure and Barring Services check. It used to be called the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check, and it is essential. A DBS check is a document that contains all information held on a person by the police and governmental departments. It can and should be used by voluntary organisations and employers (including parents) to check that the person they are recruiting is safe to be around children and vulnerable adults.

A good nanny agency will have already carried out these checks, but it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that they ask to see the results for anyone they are considering hiring. The Disclosure and Barring Service is an agency branch of the Home Office, and is, therefore, the final authority on the matter. The DBS check should always be carried out for anyone who is going to be in charge of children. It not only details any convictions and spent convictions, but also any cautions and warnings that might not show up on any other checks. It is the perfect way for parents to make an informed decision about who should be looking after their children.
