The “Mom” Moved IN!!
I don’t know about you guys, but for me time is going so FAST!!! I was going through old paperwork the other day and realized it’s been three years this Christmas since my Mom came to live with us. Now, by live with us, I mean in her very own apartment. We did things right! For the sake of all our sanity, we built an addition onto our home. This addition might be attached to our house, but from inside of her apartment, or inside the main part of the house, you would never know it.
From the outside Mom’s apartment looks like a little California Bunglo. From the inside too for that matter!! The apartment is completely separate from the main house. (Yes, we have a door down the hall that connects the two houses, but it’s locked from our side!! Am I smart or WHAT?!)
The apartment is super cute! Starting with a fully enclosed screened porch that runs the entire length of the apartment. Mom has her own entrance. We’ve really made sure everyone has their privacy and their own ‘space’. Mom’s got a full kitchen, bathroom …… all of it. Her apartment is so cute complete with her southwestern décor. I don’t think either of us would make any changes to the apartment. EXCEPT!! I do wish we would have added a water filtration system during construction. California water is gross. Growing up we lived on a large farm in Yoder Colorado. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to have fresh well water you KNOW great tasting water!! California water? Yea… not so much! So we haul gallon jugs of water from the store.
There is a lot that goes into water filtration systems. Since I’m just starting the search I’m learning all sorts of interesting things!! Did you know that most of your appliances will have a flow rate demand printed on them? I had no idea! So when you get ready to add a filtration system to your home, you start by determining the flow rate. How many water outlets you have in your home, how often those outlets are used at the same time and the number of people in your home. Then the filter, of course the better your filter the more water you have and the better water pressure your home will have too. Did you know that the best filtration systems are able to last anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 gallons in an average sized home. Of course if you have water like we do in Vista, your filter probably won’t last that long.
