Heidi Klum Debuts New Balance Activewear Line

Model Heidi Klum is keeping busy as always with her popular TV shows Project Runway and America’s Got Talent. The mom-of-four is also launching her latest activewear collection with New Balance, including fun and functional performance footwear.

Heidi opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her children –  Leni, 9, Henry, 8, Johan, 6 1/2, and Lou, 3 1/2 – and how they “love to go to the park or take a bike ride along the beach.” She goes on to talk about her kids’ favorite TV shows and her exercise routine that require “creativity.”

CBS: This is your fifth collaboration with New Balance. Can you tell us how different this collection is from all the others?

HK: “This is the first time that I have performance footwear in my collection which I am so excited about! I’ve done a couple of limited edition lifestyle sneakers before, but this time I got to make really cool and fashionable high-performance running sneakers. I’m excited that this collection finally provides women with an entire head to toe look.”

CBS: Can you give us a peek into your design process? How do you present your ideas?

HK: “I shop quite a bit so I am always aware what’s on the market and what is wanted and needed. I design things that I feel are missing. I am not afraid of pushing the envelope and giving her more than just a regular pair of black tights and shirt.

I get inspiration from things I read in a magazine or places I visit and often bring photos, fabric swatches and ideas to our design meetings. We all sit around a big table and bounce ideas off of each other. I always focus on the look of each piece, because I want women to have workout wear that’s really cool and fashionable with the newest technology.”

CBS: You’ve also partnered with other companies to baby gear, furniture. Do you have a favorite line that you’ve worked on?

HK: “They are all special to me. I take each project really seriously and pour a lot of my personal time into making them great. I have a collection with Babies “R” Us called Truly Scrumptious that I am really proud of. A lot of my inspiration for the collection came directly from my children so this project is definitely dear to my heart. After 4 kids, I have figured out what works and what doesn’t.

This spring, we did a fun Project Doodle contest where kids submitted their own doodles to have the chance to be produced on one of our Truly Scrumptious T-shirts to benefit Save the Children. They’re super cute! I also love to find ways to have my projects benefit important causes.”

CBS: How do you keep fit in your New Balance activewear? What is your exercise routine?

HK: “With my busy schedule, it is impossible to have a set routine. I like to try and incorporate exercise into my daily life whenever I can—which requires some creativity! Sometimes I jump on the trampoline with my kids or take a hike with my dogs in the canyon by my house. Sometimes I run for 30 minutes on my treadmill, but I prefer to be outdoors.”

CBS: What are your favorite pieces from the New Balance collection? We hear there’s a high performance sneaker in the line?

HK: “It’s so hard to pick a favorite but there are a few pieces that I particularly love like the Zip Capri and Essential Tank. The capris have little zip pockets to store your valuables as well as a cool leg graphic which adds a fun design element to black spandex. It’s always important to have basic, workout staples which is why I also love the Essential Tank which comes in three great colors. Below is a photo of me wearing the capris and tank in the color called “Fiery Coral.” I’m also wearing one of my favorite high performance sneakers from the collection—the 890 running sneakers in Coral.

CBS: When you do have downtime what do you like to do with your family?

HK: “We love to go to the park or take a bike ride along the beach. We definitely like to spend time outside which we get to do often in Los Angeles because the weather is always beautiful. During the summer, we barbecued a lot at home. We have friends over and jump into our beautiful pool.”

CBS: Have your children ever watched any of the reality shows you’ve been in? What do they think?

HK: “My children have always loved watching America’s Got Talent, even before I became one of the judges. Now that I am on the show, they get even more excited and tell me which contestants I should root for each week. They loved Innovative Force. They were dancing around the house pretending to be the girls. I think they are still a bit too young for Project Runway but they have come to visit me on set of Project Runway a bunch of times.”
