5 Foods That Promote Oral Health!
Eating healthy seems to be a growing trend these days, and a lot of people are focusing on how food can affect their overall health. However, something you may not know is that these healthy snacks you love can also provide great benefits to your teeth. Your friendly Twin Falls dentists at Summit Dental Care know just what you need to keep your teeth in great shape. Take a look at this list of foods that promote oral health.
- Cheese
To all of you cheese lovers out there, this might be the best news you’ve read all day. Cheese has great health benefits for your teeth. It is a great source of calcium, which can help to build up enamel that has been damaged by acidic and sugary foods. It also lowers the acid levels in your mouth to help prevent damage caused by acids.
- Apples
An apple a day keeps the… dentist away? Apples are like nature’s toothbrush. Their fibers scrub at your teeth, brushing away plaque as you bite into them, not to mention they help eliminate bad breath. That doesn’t mean eating an apple is a substitute for brushing your teeth, but you can take comfort in that fact that this delicious healthy snack is providing you more health benefits than one.
- Yogurt
High in calcium and protein, yogurt helps you build strength and improve health in your teeth. The probiotics, or good bacteria, in yogurt can slow the growth of bacteria that cause plaque, promoting good health in your gums.
- Almonds
Also a good source of calcium and protein, almonds are a perfect snack to munch on throughout the day without worrying about coating your teeth in sugar. Eat a handful for a snack, or enjoy them sliced up in a salad.
- Leafy Greens
Probably not on everyone’s favorite food list, but these greens provide a wide array of health benefits for your teeth. Besides being a good source of calcium and low in sugar, foods like spinach and kale contain folic acid which can prevent the onset of gum disease.
Keep these foods in your diet, drink plenty of water, and keep to your daily dental hygiene routines to ensure the best health for your teeth.

I eat an apple almost everyday. Good to know I’m helping my oral health. I’m good with cheese. I need to work on the greens. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for sharing this info. I knew these foods were healthy choices in our nutrition but I didn’t know cheese reduces the acid level in your mouth and yogurt slows growth of the bacteria that produces plaque on your teeth.

an apple a day only works if you like apples (which I don’t)

I love yogurt and I eat a lot of it. I like to mix it with 1tbsp of peanut butter and 1tbsp of jam and mix it with a hand mixer. Oh it is so delicious! 🙂

When I was pregnant, I couldn’t brush my teeth throughout the first 2 trimesters. I would retch each time the toothbrush was in my mouth. But I ate a lot of cheese! Perhaps this explains why I don’t have a single cavity despite not brushing my teeth for 6 months. 12 months actually – it was the same with my second pregnancy!

I love all these foods, and what is so nice is it doesn’t take much preparation to be able to enjoy them often!
