Use Your English Degree as a Social Media Manager
Do you often find yourself surfing the internet and wondering if there is any way to use your internet skills to get a job? One of the hottest jobs going right now is digital media manager. People in this profession use digital and social media to attract customers for businesses or supporters for non-profit groups. Let’s take a look at what you need to become a part of this rapidly growing field.
Social Media Savvy
Anyone who was born after 1970 knows how to use social media, but people who make their living from the internet must understand it more deeply. Someone who wants to become a social media manager must first demonstrate an ability to create an audience. They must understand how to define their brand and stick to that definition in their posts. For example, if you make jewelry and sell it on the internet, you need to find the right places to show off your work. Your Instagram account should feature attractive photos of your work that customers can like and share there and on other platforms, such as Facebook and Pinterest. You don’t want to clutter up your feeds with political opinions and memes.
Effective Blog Posts
Not all blog posts are created equal. Someone who wants to work in social media marketing needs to be able to assess the audience they want to attract to their blog and their business. What kind of language will work best for posts? Is your crowd very informal and edgy, or are your potential customers upscale and educated? It is important to know where to target your posts so that they are as effective as possible. As a manager of a small company, you will usually be the one writing the posts, but larger companies have the budget to hire writers to create content, so you will need to be able to assess what others write. You may find yourself in the position of editor as well, so you will need skills in editing and proofreading.

Connie, the rest of my family are all Cancerians. Me, I’m Virgo – tend to say things like I see them but have had to learn to bite my tongue!

Kate, I HATE that I am so sensitive. I try not to take things personally. Your family hold a grudge as well as I do? OH MAN! I can hold ’em for eternity!

You sure got that right when you said, “Not all blog posts are created equal.” It is important to connect with your audience and have followers that have somewhat the same goal in mind as yours. I love how you put your whole heart and soul into your blog. You ake people feel like you have known they personally for years. Oh and I too have a very sensitive heart and get my feeling hurt really easy. I think your right it might be the month we were born.

This post was such an education for me… I am still so old school that a social media career is so unbelievable and interesting to me….Thank you for my ongoing education!

Michele, today I had to actually search my brain to think what did I do as kid and teenager? We had a 12 family party line phone so long phone calls was a no no. Living on a farm it was too far to town for just ‘hanging out’ WHAT did I do with my time??

The career possibilities connected to the internet just keep growing. And it’s definitely mind-blowing that none of these careers were even thought of when I was a kid, lol.

Thanks for sharing this information. I liked the part about what language to use in the posts.

Shannon, I does make sense that an English Degree would help in media. I can only imagine what my Granddaughters generation will make a living doing. (did that make sense?)

Wow, Lots of information I never even would have thought of. Like your audience even. It could put a real negative impact on your site and you as well. Thanks for the info.

Diane, TRUE!! I’ve been really blessed with my followers. I would say 99.98% are positive and fun. I do this blog for fun but if I had a ton of negative I’d be gone. I get my feeling hurt super easy. Such a wimp!! I think that’s a Cancer trait. Thin skinned.
