August was BUSY! Doctor visits galore for The Husband. I hired a handyman!! Bryce is 17. He is freakishly STRONG and WICKED smart!! With his help, we got a ditch dug. Front garden weeded, raked, and looking good- okay, not good, but better. At least it’s not as embarrassing. We weeded outside the craftroom door. Built my swing. Probably my favorite job was moving Lucielle.
We moved Lucielle so she was looking out to the road, and added some solar lights to make her really stand out at night. I was laughing the entire time. Knowing I was going to scare the entire mountain. THEN went to the road and realized IT’S TOO FAR AWAY to see her!! Dog gone it. But Lucielle stays where she is. She is HEAVY!! I’ll just have to pretend she is scaring people.
Bryce has been so much help! AND he’s fun to work with. Now, if only I could find a housekeeper to work with me.
Walter is still growing like a weed. 7-month weigh-in: Mr. Walter weighs 100.1. He isn’t a fan of the tape measure so this is close but not exact. Top of head is 38″; the middle of his back to the floor 30″; from tail to nose is 49″
Whew. Dat’s a big baby lap dog.

Still in bed, but at least the wind died down and the roofman arrived at 08.30! He’s replaced a couple of ridge tiles & others near one of the chimneys where the mortar had started to become loose. That explains the water marks on the ceilings below. He re-felted that area as well so it should all dry out nicely then it can be painted properly. Not this year though! The only bit of painting I’d like to do is the hallway where I had to re-plaster the wall in places. Then I’d be able to put down the carpet tiles I bought 2 years ago that are taking up so much space.

Just got home from a trip to the pharmacy they had my prescriptions all ready to go it was a true blue miracle! One time I called the pharmacy just to make sure my stuff was ready and then when I got there it wasn’t and I had to wait forever! So today was a good one woohoo!

thanks for asking. most of my recipes come from my family. I’ve ventured out to try new ones now and then – the Japanese Milk Bread for example. I did an online search and instinct took over as to which would work best. as we all learned during lockdowns, souirdough can be tricky but once you have the right starter (mine’s name is Fred) and take good care of it, it can be great. the starter I use came from a trip to San Francisco several years. it was in a souvenir store so was dried and travelled well. once you start, you have to keep ‘feeding’ and using it. it makes great muffins. having lots of friends really helped! I’ll put the garlic rosemary recipe here soon – have an appointment to go to.

OK – back home again. this is a recipe a friend gave me. I discovered roast garlic while in Seattle years ago so incorporated it the original recipe. it’s a little fussy but I find, worth it.
ROSEMARY BREAD with ROAST GARLIC
INGREDIENTS:
ROAST GARLIC
1 head garlic
1 teaspoon olive oil
salt to taste
BREAD:
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
1 teaspoon honey or sugar
1 ¼ cups warm water (about 100 F)
1 ½ teaspoons Kosher salt
2 Tablespoons fresh chopped rosemary
8-10 roasted garlic cloves, roughly chopped
3 cups (360 grams) all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
1 tablespoon olive oil
METHOD
ROAST GARLIC:
Heat oven to 400 degrees F.
Trim the top of the garlic head to expose the cloves inside.
Place garlic in a small-lidded baking dish
Drizzle garlic with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.
Cover garlic and roast for 30-45 minutes or until cloves are soft and lightly browned.
Remove from oven and set aside to cool.
BREAD:
Combine yeast, honey or sugar, and warm water in a large mixing bowl. Let the yeast proof for about 5 minutes until the mixture is foamy.
Squeeze the roasted garlic onto a cutting board and chop.
Add salt, rosemary, and chopped roasted garlic to the bowl.
Add flour to bowl a bit at a time and stir with a wooden spoon or stiff spatula until all flour is incorporated and ingredients have just come together to form a dough.
Drizzle olive oil into a mixing bowl, add the dough and turn it over to coat all sides.
Cover with a clean tea towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until dough has doubled in size.
When dough has doubled in size, lightly flour a large cutting board.
Gently tip the dough out of the bowl and onto the cutting board.
Knead with your hands or a dough hook on an electric mixer.
Shape the dough into a ball, bringing edges together to form a seam.
Flour a mixing bowl and place the dough into it seam-side down. Cover with a clean tea towel and let rise for 30 minutes.
At about 20 minutes into the last rise, place an empty Dutch oven into the oven and heat to 450 F.
Tip the dough gently out of the bowl onto a floured cutting board or parchment paper.
Place the bread seam side up into your hot Dutch oven.
Place the lid onto the hot Dutch oven and put it into the hot oven.
Continue cooking, uncovered, for 10-20 minutes more until the bread has a brown crust.
Lift the bread out of the Dutch oven and onto a cooling rack.
Let it cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting it.
I use a kitchen scale to measure out the flour.

Foggy foggy day here… honestly glad I do not drive….baking bread today and the kitchen smells amazing…since I lived in Trinidad for over 20 years the death of the Mighty Sparrow touched me… saw him quite a few times at Carnival time – so enjoyed his calypsos.. laugh and also realized the truth in so many of them…

OK, so I sold my like-new slow cooker on FB. I’m downsizing one thing at a time. I find that using a big pot on the stove works better, and I won’t go anywhere with it on. So no real loss. I see many people have items on there forever, for way more. I guess they don’t care if they sell it.

I have been so tired recently. My bad leg aches, but at least it isn’t really painful now. It is still swollen because of edema, though, so that is getting old–it’s heavy and just tiring lugging it around, lol. Physical therapy is helping somewhat, I think.

It’s lymphedema cased by an autoimmune response, they think. Lasix does nothing for it. (Tried it, peed a lot, lol, but never touched the edema.) Steroids help a lot but have side effects that are hard to handle. The doctors are trying to figure out a small dose of steroids I could take regularly but it’s harrd to figure it out. They hate prescribing steroids unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I was in a lot of pain this morning, but had to drop my car off at the shop. On my way there, a woman’s truck had broken down and she was flagging people down because her truck was on the road. I talked with her for a minute, then prayed over her. Tears rolled down her face. She said that was the best thing anyone could have done. What a God moment!!

the day is going well, now. started out early this morning to get groceries for myself and a house-bound neighbour. the lid on the large milk jug wasn’t put on correctly at the factory, even though it looked OK. by the time I got home, there was milk all over the place. I’ve just finished washing everything in site. I usually carry several reusuable bags and some were quite soaked. the last thing I need is the cart smelling like sour milk. anyway it’s over now so I’m preparing for an evening meeting. hopefully tomorrow has a little less drama in it. enjoy your day. thanks

Wowzer, they are turning on the heat tomorrow. It is nice cool and crisp. We have no control over the heat, but when they turn it on, it goes up to 78-82. I get about one month between summer and winter that it is not over 80 degrees in my unit. In summer, this year, it went up to 92 and humid, very scary.

Made another chicken soup today. This time I tweaked it a little from the last one. All the usuals carrots and peas, also potatoes and baby spinach broken up, lots of garlic and browned onion. And the chicken nice and tender. And used thyme and parsley. Just put everything away.

Quick change of plan yesterday – a friend was rushed to hospital and her pooch a Great Pyrenees needed a quick home! lunch was put on hold, pooch picked up and is now at my neighbors condo… what a gorgeous dog! a huge gentle giant – enjoyed getting down on the floor and enjoying his hugs..lol…today is another grey rainy day here so inside on the treadmill, some painting and my book! Handed in my BP monitor this morning after a sleepless night and less than an hour later a nurse rang concerned about the results: it registered high practically every time. Explained to her that the bloody thing was so painful when it inflated it’s left me with a couple of bruises! Honestly, it brought tears to my eyes, begging for it to end so I could breath again. Anyway, seeing the Doc on the 30th for a review … ps: It’s flu shot season, folks!

It has been a busy few days..Monday went off with my galpal to a large garden center for fall flowers and some pumpkins – getting the patios ready for fall….then a few more stops and lunch.. Yesterday took a long walk to the Dollar Tree for some stationery items and some bips and bobs – odds and ends…
Tomorrow working the food bank in the early morning for donations that are coming in theis evening…
Have a chicken and some veggies roasting and the house smells so good – feels like autumn! Happy Wed all…

I had to pick up first aid supplies and when I was walking up to the check out area I walked past the “fine jewelry” counter and noticed that all that was in the locked cases were teeny tiny pictures of each item. So now I guess they’re locking up pictures of the “fine Jewelry”. I was shaking my head all the way home! lol

Feeling tired today. I had my first real physical therapy day (the previous one was really an evaluation visit.) anyway, my leg is tired to begin with from the pain of the last few weeks but at least the pain has eased–now it’s just tired so I have to strengthen it, but that is exhausting, too, lol.

The roofing guy that the painter man recommended arrived this morning & fixed 4 cracked/broken roof tiles. While he was up there I asked him to check the flashing around one of the chimneys as there are water stains on tthe ceilings below. He found a hole where the ridge tiles that top the roof meet the downward tiles & a crack in the lead flashing. All fixable thank goodness! He only uses 2nd hand tiles so they blend in (and are cheaper). Once he’s fixed them, I’ll be able to crack on & paint the ceiling in the 2 rooms affected.

The car’s in the garage since yesterday – nothing major, just checking everything before it’s annual test next month. What a day! Had a Dr.s appt this morning, then a 50 min trip to the nearest vet to buy some worming stuff for the cats. Popped into a supermarket on the way back to go to the loo; did a HUGE poo then discovered that the flush didn’t work! I snuck out of there as quickly as I could and will never show my face in there again! Then my laptop died. Luckily I knew it was on the way out & bought a refurbished one a couple of months ago and am now trying to set it up.

Just got in the door from doing some serious grocery shopping had to go to three different stores to get everything that I needed. I gotta say… I saw ZERO big deals out there for the holiday weekend. It is a nice day today. It started with a surprise “reminder” for Jury duy coming up asap, that I never got the original letter! oh oh. I finally get thru and they admit I did not get the original, as it was sent back to them as undeliverable due to typos in the address to me. But they were still going to hold my feet to the fire, but I hav no car, and no way to get there, so I was able to get excused. Our state changed the age for jury duty to 75, and not optional for older people such as over 65, or over 70. Mandatory.

Well, you know where I am, about 3 miles from the nearest town, Swinford, County Mayo, in the west of Ireland, in a townland called Cloonfinnaun. The house name ‘Corris’, is the name of the tiny mountain village in the North of Wales where Mum was born & reared, There were 2 slate signs at the last house in Wexford & H.got one and I brought mine to here. Nostalgia aside, my view is something I look forward to each & every day, Green fields, a mountain in the distance, and peace, perfect peace, apart from the sound of traffic on the main road. Never heard the traffic before a huge storm/hurricane hit and demolished so many trees back in Jan. 2025. It literally flattenened most of the conifers between here & the main road, hence the noise I hear now. By the way, there’s a small international airport, 30 miles to the north-east of here, Knock (Google it!), in case any of ye care to pop in!
