Tips for Choosing the Perfect Backyard Water Fountain
Adding a water fountain to your backyard can transform it into your personal haven that offers aesthetic beauty and the relaxing sound of cascading water. However, with so many options out there, it’s not always easy to know where to start looking. Fortunately, we have some helpful tips for choosing the perfect backyard water fountain that can make your backyard into the oasis you’ve been dreaming about.
Consider Your Space and Location
Before you consider buying a fountain, it’s a good idea to take a closer look at the space you’re working with. If you’re looking to spruce up your outdoor space, you should have a rough idea of how much room you have. Are you looking to install the fountain on a back patio or directly in the yard?
It’s always a good idea to think about your surroundings. A particularly large fountain can make a small yard feel cramped and confined, while a tiny fountain may look awkward on a larger plot of open land. You may want to consider the proximity to electrical sources if your fountain requires a pump, as well as the ease of access for maintenance.
Choose a Style That Complements Your Yard
The style of your water fountain should harmonize with the overall design of your backyard and your home. For example, a rustic wooden fountain may look out of place with modern architecture, while something sleek and minimalistic will clash with an antique home.
Fortunately, there are many different types of fountains to consider that range in visual style and the flow of water. Finding something that matches your home’s aesthetics can help make it feel like a more natural installation.
Think About Functionality and Maintenance
While aesthetics are important, a helpful tip for choosing the perfect backyard water fountain is to consider functionality. Are you looking for something with minimal upkeep that’ll just provide a steady stream of white noise, or do you want something a bit more hands on like a waterfall that leads into a koi pond?
Some fountains might need regular cleaning, especially if they include intricate designs or multiple tiers. Consider the type of water pump used. Submersible pumps are generally quieter and more efficient. Additionally, think about installing a filtration system to keep the water clean and clear, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
Evaluate the Sound and Lighting Effects
One of the main benefits of a backyard water fountain is the soothing sound of flowing water. When choosing your fountain, consider the type of sound it will produce. A gentle trickle can create a calming atmosphere, while a more robust flow might be energizing.
Additionally, think about incorporating lighting effects to enhance the fountain’s beauty at night. Well-placed lights can highlight the water’s movement and create a magical ambiance, making your garden a delightful retreat even after sunset.
Selecting the perfect backyard water fountain involves thoughtful consideration of space, style, functionality, sound, and lighting. By taking these factors into account, you can choose a fountain that not only beautifies your garden but also provides a serene and enjoyable outdoor experience.

I love water fountains. I wish I had my own yard to have one.

I don’t have a back yard, but ooh I want a white picket fence with roses, and now also a fountain. That would be perfect!

I remember when my grandma had a ‘bird bath’ in her yard back in the 70s and 80s. Those were the first water features!

I would love a beautiful birdbath. My sink idea? Failed miserably. Today I’m filling it in with dirt and planting wildflowers.

I had to pin this pin – worthy article! I too wanted a fountain for my yard. Except I picked one that hung on the front of the house. We had a brick house. We hung a beautiful lion 🦁 head fountain ⛲️ that the water kept flowing over and over again with a touch of color from a well hidden color wheel. It was beautiful 🤩 A fountain is an added addition of classic beauty!!
Thanks for sharing!

Have saw a lot of different water foundations on facebook ETC and just are expensive and some are just a little bit of this and that. I think the bubblers are really pretty and would enjoy watching the birds play in it

I grew up on top of a mountain! We had the best artesian well water. We all still talk about it. And tons of mountain blueberries.

I love fountains, but hate that cats eat the birds attracted there!

Ohhhhhhh I hadn’t thought of the cats. Other than the mystery cat that showed up last summer we don’t have any strays. I’m still hoping for a fountain. LOL
