Why E-commerce Companies Need Fast Shipping
In the early days of e-commerce, if a consumer placed an online order and it magically appeared on the doorstep a week later, he or she was probably astonished that it showed it up at all. My, how things have changed! With Amazon driving the delivery bar ever higher, today’s consumers consider an order to be slow if it shows up in two days. With such a tight delivery window, e-commerce companies have to work very hard and very smart to stay in the game.
The infographic below, How to Speed Up E-commerce Deliveries, is essential reading for leadership and operations personnel in just about any type of e-commerce environment. Start-up companies need to become experts in rapid delivery — and they need to do this quickly. Established e-commerce companies need to consider new fulfillment strategies to shorten lead times without adding substantial cost. Rapidly growing e-commerce firms may have found that delivery solutions perfectly suitable six months ago are hopelessly out of date and inefficient today given their current volume of orders.
E-commerce is an exciting business because the sky’s the limit. When an e-commerce website is launched, it reaches a market the size of the entire U.S., or even the whole world. That’s a lot of upside. The problem is, exposing your company to a vast geographic area is far easier than delivering to all points within that geography overnight or the same day. And, without doing so, as the infographic points out, around 95% of your market will label you as slow.
Solutions to the problem offered in the infographic include tactics you can use inside the box, and others that take you outside the box. A common solution to fast delivery problem of e-commerce is partnering with a 3PL. These companies have sophisticated systems for picking, material handling and transportation that can turn your vexing delivery challenges into a non-issue.
3PLs are not always the answer, though. Keeping operations tightly under your control is a major plus for many e-commerce companies, and the infographic describes a number of ideas for speeding up internal operations — and just as important, ideas for doing that without letting your operating costs spiral out of control. An important way to control shipping costs is to get creative with packaging. Smaller containers, lighter weight packaging materials and automated packing systems not only reduce packaging costs, but can produce a substantial reduction in shipping costs as well.
I’ve got to the point that I just don’t want to order if I’m not getting free shipping–even if I suspect they’re just raising the price of the item to cover shipping, lol.
I won’t buy anything from Amazon until their workers receive their human rights.
Since Brexit & the pandemic there have been major supply issues in the UK PLUS you now have to pay customs tax. If I can buy something from mainland Europe for half the price, free shipping & no taxes then that’s where my business is going.
I remember the days when 4-6 weeks for delivery was the norm, lol. Today, that would be nuts. When the pandemic first delayed shipping, I waited over a month for an Amazon delivery and realized how used to speedy delivery we’ve become.
It really hits that instant gratification button!!
I saw what Amazon for loyal buyers. It makes a lot of sense.
It’s really mind boggling how fast things ship these days.
I am ALL about shipping when I buy something online. To tell you the truth I hate paying for shipping and will usually shop more with a company that offers free shipping. Amazon has been a joke lately it took like a month to get my last order.
I was surprised how quickly I got my package from amazon last week and I don’t even have prime. I ordered some vitamins and supplements every store in town was out of and got them in two days.
I am not so happy with Amazon since I am a prime member and it took almost a week to get my last purchase.
I agree. Fast shipping is always good…and honestly, I’m I’m willing to accept slower shipping only if it’s free.
I know these companies are really going to be super busy this holiday season!
Shipping has definitely been a big issue this year.
Yeah. This holiday season will be interesting.
Yeah Amazon has upped the bar on shipping speeds. It is hard for me to be patient with anything more than one day.
