6 Kitchen Remodel Projects on a Budget
Kitchen remodel projects are a great way to change the look, feel, and experience of your kitchen.
The kitchen is an important room of the house. In addition to serving as the main room for meal prep, in many households the kitchen is a focus for socialization.
Given the importance of the kitchen, it is a good idea to prioritize this room for remodeling efforts to help it look fresh and new. Getting some expert advice and a free quote for kitchen remodeling Richmond, or wherever you may be, is a great idea. However, not everyone has an unlimited budget. Here are 6 kitchen remodel projects that won’t break the bank.
1). Kitchen Cabinet Refacing
Kitchen cabinet refacing is an excellent way to make your kitchen look brand new without breaking the bank.
Think about the first things you see when you walk into your kitchen. If your kitchen is like most kitchens, your cabinets are pretty high on that list.
Cabinets have flat, wide surfaces, and that makes them visually significant. You may not think of them that way if you’re used to them, but that’s just it: these surfaces are important for forming your mental image of your kitchen.
Get a professional to help you with your kitchen cabinet refacing, and you won’t recognize your old cabinets. They’ll remove the doors, double-laminate the frames, and then put on new doors.
2). Countertops
Similar to your cabinets, your countertops are visually significant areas in your kitchen. They’re relatively wide, flat, and generally positioned in a way that will make sure you see them the moment you walk into the kitchen.
Here’s a dirty little secret about countertops: they don’t have to match, and it can be more visually interesting if you mix and match them. One of the better ways to do this is to get wood countertops – they tend to be quite affordable, are not all that difficult to install, and they add a strong sense of character.
You can keep things simple and replace a single prep area, or you can get a little more ambitious and redo the whole kitchen.
3). Tile Backsplash
Your kitchen’s walls are another prime area to target for a remodel. One of the more impactful remodel projects for kitchen walls is a tile backsplash.
Think about the overall colors and tones of your kitchen. What colors and tones in a tile backsplash will best improve the look and feel of the room as a whole?
Tiles offer many different options in terms of color and visual interest, so you have plenty of choices. Don’t be afraid to let your creativity take wing: you might be surprised by what you can come up with.
4). Use the Wall Space
Speaking of your kitchen’s walls, how much of that space are you actually using? Try installing some storage on your kitchen walls if you haven’t already.
Your options here are pretty diverse. You might try shelves, hooks, racks, or rails, and you might use them to hold dishes – pots, for example – oven mitts, kitchen hand towels, and other things.
Using the wall space is a great way to make things more accessible in your kitchen. An added benefit is that it frees up space in your drawers, cabinets, and countertops.
5). Faucets and Fixtures
Another thing to think about is your faucet. How old is it? When was it last replaced? Most importantly, do you like it?
If you are not particularly keen on your faucet, you may want to consider switching it for a new one. In the event that you have been using an older faucet, you may be surprised by the functionality that newer models offer – in many cases functionality that simply was not a part of common faucet design in past decades.
When you install your new faucet, you will want to shut off the water valves and follow all directions very carefully. Fortunately, this is a fairly easy plumbing-related project, and the results are likely to be very satisfactory.
6). How About Furniture?
One interesting kitchen remodel trend is the incorporation of furniture into kitchens. Think about a kitchen island with trolleys with drawers: if you don’t already have a good one, why not find a table or cabinet that can serve?
Part of what makes this so much fun is that you can hunt for vintage or used furniture – for example, on social media – and find creative ways to incorporate it into your kitchen.
You may also want to get a little more hands-on and do some cleaning, sanding, and painting or varnishing to add to the charm of whatever pieces you end up incorporating into your kitchen.
Conclusion
Your kitchen is an important room of your house for meal prep, and it also tends to be a place where people spend a lot of time.
Given this, it is a good idea to make your kitchen priority number one, or at least a high priority, when you are thinking about remodeling. Remodels can raise concerns about costs, but the 6 projects we have discussed here should get you off to a good and affordable start.

My kitchen is overdue for some lovin’ updates. The cabinets have been painted so many times I dont’ think they could be painted again, and how much work to get all the layers off. They are old-fashioned. My flooring has gotten sunburned. I have laminate countertops. At this point it is a dream, but it is up there in priority to do a few things if I can. I know that it can make a big difference for selling, also. You don’t need to spend a fortune, it is true, you can do it on a budget. I just don’t have any wiggle room! I recall Connie, your kitchen renovation with Home Depot. After all the struggles, it is really gorgeous!!

If money were no object, and I could do anything in my kitchen, I’d adapt it for a wheelchair. I mean everything needs to be lower. I need to find it easier to get the chair close to the sink. I want a fridge with the freezer on the bottom.

The way house prices are going I’m going to have to install a new kitchen & bathroom but these days you can buy whole kitchen units etc. second-hand/shop-soiled on websites much cheaper than buying new.

I was thinking it would be really awesome to do my kitchen walls like you hve Connie, in your kitchen. Oh and I have a whole old barn to work with. That would be on my budget. Wonder if the husband would agree!

Diane, I am volunteering to help!! How many planks could we get off the barn before he notices??? Now I want the barn wood to cover the weird beam across the ceiling……. blah blah support beam ya can’t get rid of it so I’ve been told… but I could cover it!! It’s just so dang expensive. So it’s in the bucket list.

These are all great ideas. I love a pretty backsplash myself. We replaced our appliances and the faucet a few years ago and it really made the kitchen look so much better.

When we moved in our old farm house the kitchen cabinets were dark walnut stain with avocado green counter tops. Well my father was a paint contractor and he went to work on them. He painted them white. I brightened up my kitchen so much. Even though we couldn’t afford to change the counter tops, it really made a big difference. I also had my kitchen against a solid wall. He installed a mirror with panes on it. That way it looked like a window and made the kitchen brighter and larger. Small changes but big difference.

You’d be surprised what a few little changes can do. You don’t need to change your cabinets, maybe just paint them and change the hardware on them. Paint the walls or add a new area rug. Little changes can work.

Tamra, the cupboards in the Vista house were so dark that adding the white made a HUGE difference!!!!! New nobs too! I love the idea of a new area rug in the kitchen.
