2 Tips For Keeping Your Dog Safe

Being a dog owner brings a lot of responsibilities, one of which is making sure they’re safe. Aside from seeing to their needs, dogs can be quite clumsy and aren’t fully aware of what’s good for them and what isn’t. It’s for this reason that you need to make sure you’re taking proper care of your dog, and not just letting them do whatever they like. That often means being strict with your pet and making sure you know what they need, rather than what they want.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t let your dog have fun, but being careless is going to put both you and them in unnecessary danger.

Train them properly

Untrained animals can be unpredictable, especially when it comes to being in public. You need to know that your dog can be calm in public areas, and will respond to you when you call for it. Professional dog trainers can help you to get your dog properly trained, to the point where they will come when you call, and won’t do anything you don’t expect.

Keeping Your Dog Safe with a leash Bernese mountain dogFor example, if you’re at a public park with your dog, you want to make sure they’re safe to roam. If dogs are allowed off of the leash, then their response to you is incredibly important. You can stop them from going too far, or near hazards, and your time with them can be much more relaxed and enjoyable. Then there’s also the question of whether or not you should let strangers pet your dog. In some situations, it might be unavoidable, and you want to make sure your dog is going to react positively to strangers.

Feed them a strict diet

If you’re going to keep your dog safe, you need to know what’s healthy for them, (like lamb: https://www.nextritionpet.com/blogs/nutrition/3-amazing-health-benefits-of-feeding-lamb-to-your-dog) and what’s dangerous for them. By feeding them a diet based on food that you would eat, or food that you assume they would like – you’re putting their health at risk. It’s much better if you speak to your vet, or other professionals in the industry about what kind of diet your dog should be having. Every dog breed is different, so there are of course different nutritional needs to be fulfilled. Once you know what they need to be eating, stick to it.

You should also know that once you bring a dog home, you can never have food out where the dog can reach it. Dogs can be curious, and they don’t know what’s good for them and what isn’t. Leaving out food on tables, countertops, and so on is taking a risk that just isn’t worth it. Be sure that you’re not leaving any food or liquids in places that your dog can reach them.

Many dog owners are quite relaxed with what they feed their dogs, which can lead to dogs eating a lot of foods that aren’t healthy for them and can lead to a number of illnesses down the line.

You’ve definitely got to be careful with food or anything ingestible with dogs. They’ll eat almost anything. I once had a dog that broke into a pack of Halls.

The biggest safety problem I had was with a dog that was always digging under the fence trying to get out. And he managed it a few times! He was a champion digger, lol.

Definitely agree about being careful what you feed them. So many ‘human foods’ can actually harm a dog. I had neighors who both fed my last dog over the fence–and that dog was getting fat and I couldn’t figure out why! And his stomach was getting upset–because one lady was feeding him pinto beans and coenbread, lol.
