Walter’s Puppy Survival Guide: Do Puppies NEED Probiotics?
Walter’s Puppy Guide to Growing Up HEALTHY with The Help of Probiotics!
Listen up, fellow furball friends. Walter here, your resident 7-month-old puppy correspondent, with another installment of Puppy Survival. It’s been a while since I’ve checked in with you, almost a full month even.
I’d like to share a couple of my accomplishments.
I’m 100% house-broke. Remember, I told you that Mom was going wacko-nuts towards the end of potty training? I even heard her mumble something about me being an outside dog if I didn’t learn. WELL, let’s just say I absolutely can not be an outside puppy! I’m JUST a baby after all. Besides, it’s dark out there on the mountain, IF you could hear the noises out there, well, you’d learn to stop peeing inside the house too!
I’ve learned the usuals: sit, lie down, shake, and such. I can roll over, play dead, which makes Mom laugh and call me a drama queen. HEY! What can I say? Acting is in my blood.
I stay. By stay I mean until I can’t see Mom and I’m done. I need to know what Mom is doing! What if she is doing something fun? Or EATING?! Mostly, I’m a good boy, Mom tells me so at least a hundred times a day.
I’ve also grown a bit in the last month. I’m now 90+ pounds. I’m also grown quite tall. How do I know? Well, see, I love ROCKS. LOVE ’em! I will find a nice big 2 to 3″ one to chew on. Mom says it’s like nails on a chalkboard. So before I’m allowed back in the house, Mom pry’s the rock outta my mouth. (BTW, Mom is stronger than she looks. And shorter than she THINKS she is) This task used to involve her straddling my back. HA HA!! Joke’s on her! I am officially too tall for Mom to straddle. She does still manage to get the rock, it’s just not as easy for her.
Growing Fast AND Healthy
Mom has started giving me a new tasty treat a couple of times a day. These are tasty chicken-flavored Petnanny Probiotics for Dogs. The first one she gave me, well, I wasn’t sure if she was carrying a grudge and trying to poison me. How was I supposed to know that destroying Dad’s slipper was a bad thing?
So, just to be on the safe side, I gently placed the new treat between my lips and sat down, spat it out, and looked at it. Then nudged it with my nose. Smelled great. Then I picked it up again, threw it in the air. It didn’t move, so I figured it was safe to eat. A few more minutes of batting it between my paws, kitty style.
Then Mom made a step towards the new treat and let me tell you I had that treat in my mouth, chewing as fast as possible. There are NO take-backs in this house!
NOW, Mom uses them as training treats! She’s smart like that.

Petnanny Probiotics For Dog: Why Does a Growing Puppy Need Probiotics?
Growing up is hard work! Between rapid growth spurts, exploring the backyard (and eating things we shouldn’t, like Turkey POOP! My palette declares this a delicacy, even if Mom makes those heaving noises), and adjusting to new routines, a puppy’s stomach goes through a lot.
Here’s why probiotics are a total game-changer for a growing pup:
- Balanced Gut Microflora: Probiotics introduce beneficial “good” bacteria to the digestive tract, keeping harmful bacteria in check and reducing upset stomachs, gas, and loose stools.
- Stronger Immune System: Did you know that roughly 70% to 80% of a dog’s immune system resides in their gut? A healthy digestive system helps young puppies build a robust immune defense as they grow.
- Better Nutrient Absorption: Puppies need every bit of nutrition from their food to grow big and strong. Probiotics help break down food and enhance nutrient absorption so every meal counts.
- Stress and Transition Support: Dietary changes, weaning, training, and routine adjustments can trigger stress in puppies, which often leads to digestive distress. Daily probiotics keep the gut steady through life’s big changes.
Let Your Humans Know: Simple Steps for Gut Health
If you want your pup to grow up strong, happy, and full of energy, don’t wait for digestive troubles to start! Talk to your vet about adding a daily probiotic soft chew to their routine.
Key Takeaways for Dog Parents:
Consult Your Vet: Always check with your veterinarian to determine the right dosage for your puppy’s age, weight, and specific health needs.
Choose Quality Like PETNANNY: Look for dog-specific probiotic chews made with high-quality ingredients and tasty flavors (like chicken) that your dog considers a treat.
Be Consistent: Daily support is key to building and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome.

OMGEEEEEEEE Tamra, you have NO IDEA how well trained I am. This boy is SO BIG (AND ONLY half grown?) SO spoiled. SOOOOOOO spoiled. He is a funny boy. I KNOW I saw him roll his eyes at me yesterday when I suggested it might be time to go outside. GESH!!

I tried this on my young pup but it didn’t seem to help him much 🤷

It’s made a HUGE difference in Walter scratching and biting his leg. I need to be sure he lives a long and happy (spoiled) life. : )
