Give Away!! Interactive iPad book Elfishki & The Unwelcome Guest Review

Ever since I won my iPad3, from OvationTV, Baby Alice is convinced that she actually WON the iPad.  It may be a teeeny tiny bit my fault because I keep finding great apps to download for her.  Elfishki and the Unwelcome Guest is a great example!!

I was lucky enough to review Elfishki and the Giant Cake back in February of  2012, Emma and Eli still love that app!! I still get ‘cakes’ emailed to me just about every week!!  Elfishki apps continue to be fun, the kids don’t get tired of the story or the interactive screens. The Unwelcome Guest is no different! Alice loves the bright colorful illustrations.  The Unwelcome Guest, like the other Elfishki Apps has the option of reading the story yourself or have it read to you.  The narrator, Jason Damron, of The Unwelcome Guest has a  lot of expression in his voice which he changes for each character. Jason makes the story very entertaining.

The app has the story on one page followed by an interactive page of bright colors and fun characters.  I love love, love the last page of the Unwelcome Guest, to adorable!!  The story itself, takes place on the beautiful Rainbow Island in the middle of the Sparkling Sea where the magical little people called Elfishki live. Elfishki are special little people, some fly, some can swim like mermaids. The animals on Rainbow Island can talk and the trees can understand. Rainbow Island is a place where miracles happen ever day!

The Unwelcome Guest follows Vince and his friend, a dragon named Brungildo, (Brungildo is just a big ice cream truck!) the duo went to their garage for the freezer boxes. But they couldn’t get inside. Vince kept putting his key into the keyhole, but it would just fall out—as if somebody pushed it back. Vince peeked into the keyhole and was dumbfounded—inside the lock was a tiny blue person with a tail… (you’ll have to get the app to hear the rest of the story.

On the bottom middle of each page are 3 question marks. Tapping the question marks brings up a question. For instance, ‘”What kind of an instrument is Maggie holding in her hands? Why does she need it?” The question is also read out loud for the little ones that can’t read. Interactive AND educational!!  The three questions on every page of the book specifically designed to help your child analyze the text, boost their imagination and make predictions about the story. One of my favorite parts of this app is the bonus game “Help Jeanso Pack his Backpack”. It’s on the order of an I Spy book, you drag each of the items into Jeanso’s backpack. The game is specifically designed to test your child’s attention to detail.

The entire app is stunning.  The artwork is amazing and fun. The Unwelcome Guest is original, not found anywhere else captivating texts, designed to develop your child’s conscious reading skills – according to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
