7 Tips for a More Beautiful and Functional Home Office!

When you work from home, you owe it to yourself to create and design a space that is properly designed as home office. Most people will agree that when you work from home, it’s the space that really matters in terms of productivity in home office. If you have kids at home or someone else at home while you work, it’s really hard to stay busy and productive when you are constantly hearing “outside” noise i.e.; if you made your kitchen table a workspace for your home office, you deserve better! This is a place/space where you need to feel happy, comfortable, inspired, and productive so if you don’t have that now, well, something needs to change. Here are a few ways to make your home office more attractive and make you more productive.HomeOffice1

Location Location Location!

Don’t choose the table in the kitchen. Not only are you going to have 20 other things interrupting your concentration (are you ever suddenly hungry when you aren’t really hungry?!!!), but the people in your home can also sort of feel like they can interrupt your work because you are in an open space. It can be hard to get any work done when stuff like this happens. Instead of choosing the kitchen table, think about choosing a private room for your home office – a guest room you don’t really use, a basement that can be finished, or even a formal living room you barely use.Add a door. Definitely add a door. This is going to reduce noise from the other spaces in the house, but it’s also going to deter family members from coming into the space when the door is shut.HomeOffice2

Choose An Alternative Way To Work

Research shows that sitting too much is actually really bad for your heart, legs, and your body over all. Instead of choosing a sit down desk, why not consider a stand up desk? Several companies offer these stand up desks and they are incredibly easy to set up and install. Also, since you won’t be using a chair, you won’t have to spend extra money on something extra!

Consider The Angles

If you don’t have a lot of straight wall space to place a desk, start looking at those angled walls. Chances are when you moved in and started decorating the place you thought, “Crap, what the heck are we going to put here?!” Well, you can find customized desks that will fit in spots just like that and you won’t be taking up any extra space.

If You Do Use A Chair….

For Home Office you must use a chair that is comfortable. Don’t use a dining room chair that is going to break your back in an hour, don’t use a foldable metal chair that will hurt your buttocks! Use a chair that is comfortable, and has cushions for your buttocks and back as well as cushioned arm handle for your arms and elbows. Hey, if you are going to spend 8 hours in this chair, it might as well be something you really love! I would shop for the best high back office chair I could afford. You won’t be sorry!

Lighting Is Essential

In Home Office Lighting is key in a space where you work. You absolutely need to consider overhead lighting obviously to light the entire length of the room, but you also need to think about task lighting ie; lighting for the tasks that you need to do. If you want to use a desk light – find one that has ALL the forms and features you want; the perfect height, angle adjustments, 3 option switcher, etc.

Don’t Forget Your Walls

Whether you decide to paint your walls a color you really love, one that inspires you or moves you, or you just put up a few posters or pictures you really love, the last thing you want is a boring plain Jane office with boring plain Jane walls. Spruce it up a little bit!

Greenery and Flowers

Greenery and flowers help to clean the air, but they are also just really pretty and will add something to your home office that nothing else can. Just make sure you get a plant or flowers that are good for you. If you don’t have a green thumb, don’t buy an orchid or an expensive plant that needs the perfect amount of water and sun to survive. Buy a cactus (just kidding…. Well… not really.) On the other hand if you do have a green thumb get something that you really love – something that will relax you on your breaks in between work to prune or take care of.

    Hi Connie,

I just repainted my home office and that small change livened it up. I keep candles and photos of the fam around and other knick knacks. I do like the idea of adding flowers.

    Thanks for sharing these ideas.

When I was studying for my most recent degree I turned a corner of my bedroom into my office space with a corner desk that I made myself, my pc, shelves for my reference books etc. I also screened the area off from the rest of the room using some of my tallest houseplants so that the rest of the room was for relaxing and sleep.

It would be nice to have a huge home office, like you see in movies, where the office is lined with shelves of books, has a great old desk & amazing woodwork on the walls. I’m dreaming out loud, lol.
