Why Volkswagen Is Saying Goodbye to Its Convertible
Some cars capture our imaginations and become more than just vehicles; they become symbols of a specific era, lifestyle, or personality. Volkswagen is a brand that knows how to make these iconic cars, from buses to beetles. The company also tried its hand at convertibles with its line of cabriolets, but this era is coming to an end. Read on to learn why Volkswagen is saying goodbye to its convertible and where the brand is moving to instead.
A Nostalgic Farewell
Volkswagen hasn’t made many convertibles, but the ones it has have been popular, iconic models for the company. These are the most notable convertibles Volkswagen produced:
- Beetle Cabriolet
- Golf Cabriolet
- Eos
- T-Roc Cabriolet
Though the evolution of the Volkswagen Cabrio over the years has been a general success for the company, it wants to move in a different direction. Volkswagen’s only current convertible is the T-Roc Convertible, and the company will cease its production sometime between 2025 and 2027.
Why VW Is Closing the Roof
Though it’s hard to tell for certain why Volkswagen is saying goodbye to its convertible lineup, the market probably has a big influence. Convertibles have, for several years, accounted for only a small slice of the automotive market. Consumer interest has increasingly veered toward larger vehicles, like SUVs and crossovers, which now dominate showroom floors. Volkswagen, like any forward-thinking automaker, is aligning its focus with evolving consumer preferences.
Another contributing factor is the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs). VW is directing major investments into its electric lineup, with ambitious plans to make 55 percent of its US sales for EVs by 2030.
While convertibles hold sentimental value for the brand, they don’t align with the overarching strategic goals of streamlining production and meeting environmental targets.
What’s Next for Volkswagen Fans?
Even though VW convertibles are exiting stage left, the brand remains committed to innovating and appealing to a broader audience. With the push toward EVs, fans can expect cutting-edge designs, enhanced efficiency, and a strong focus on sustainable mobility. While it’s hard to say goodbye to an icon, Volkswagen’s future promises to be just as exciting.
Fortunately, Cabrio loyalists don’t have to let go of their beloved VW convertibles. These cars might soon go out of production, but the collector’s community won’t let them die. If you get one now, you could soon be taking care of an exclusive, luxury car that everyone on the road will envy. With the help of you and other VW fans, we’re sure to see these classic, stylish cars on the streets for many, many years to come—so keep an eye out!

With new innovation comes new styles. It’s sad to see the convertible go, but I am excited to see what new designs VW comes up with.
